Als het aankomt op de nationale schatten, dan staat de berg Athos naast de Akropolis in Athene. Het oostelijke eiland van Halkidiki is 's werelds enige religieuze republiek, gedomineerd door de monniken in hun zwarte habijten van de middeleeuwse kloosters. De toegang ertoe is dan ook beperkt: vrouwen en vrouwtjesdieren, behalve katten, mogen er geen voet aan wal zetten.

Daarom is deze boottocht de beste manier om het te zien. Leun achterover en geniet van de zon terwijl de boot langs het schiereiland vaart. Zo krijg je van dichtbij de kloosters te zien die bijna over de klif lijken te vallen. Het is een fascinerende glimp van de geheime wereld van de monniken.

En je kunt de Athos of de Heilige Berg zelf niet missen: het staat 2.000 meter hoog op de zuidelijkste punt van het schiereiland, een imposant gezicht. Als je met de boot aankomt in Ouranopoli krijg je een lunch geserveerd, voordat je terug naar huis vaart.

Halkidiki boat trip with Neos Marmaras visit, swimming and lunch

Slow down and ease into a day where you'll escape the crowds and experience a little laidback luxury as you cruise around the western shore of Halkidiki's Sithonia Peninsula. Helene, a local guide, says “this tour takes us to some of my favourite spots. Spathies Beach has secluded coves without the usual hustle and bustle of the resorts, while Neos Marmaras offers a balance of cosy tavernas and traditional Greek charm, with modern bars and facilities.” You'll head to Nikiti Port where your boat awaits. From here, you'll sail down the coast of the Toroneos Gulf before dropping anchor at Spathies Beach for your first swim stop. Helene adds, “make sure you grab a snorkel and mask to make the most of this hotspot for parrotfish and damselfish – you may find an octopus hiding in rocky reefs, too.” Then, it's back on board to sail towards Neos Marmaras Village.There's free time for a wander around the village, where you can shop for souvenirs or chat with the friendly locals – it's the best way to soak up the culture. Then, you'll return to the sea and sail to Kelyfos Island, affectionally known as Turtle Island, while enjoying a light lunch on board. The cliffs of this tiny island make for some curious-looking cave formations at its edge that beg to be explored. Take the plunge off the side of the boat and swim around this uninhabited land. Or, if your idea of fun is simply basking on the deck with some music and a cold drink in hand, then feel free to unwind. Whatever floats your boat, you'll want to drink in the coastal views as you sail back to the harbour after a day of escapism.
