Why you’ll love this…
  • You'll have time to potter around the cobbled lanes and dinky shops of pretty Guadalest town
  • It's worth the climb up to Guadalest Castle for the wow-worthy views over the reservoir to the sea
  • The Algar Falls have a beautiful, otherworldly feel - dip a toe in one of the clear blue pools
  • There are scenic twists and turns on the drive from the coast into the Aitana mountains and back
  • Your local guide is an expert on the mountains, villages and natural wonders of inland Costa Blanca
What to expect

Two of the Costa Blanca's most photogenic inland spots are the star turns of this tour. You'll visit the fairytale village of Guadalest and the serene Algar waterfalls. Expect amazing scenery and a dramatic drive as you twist and turn along narrow mountain roads. Sofia, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Even though there isn't much left standing of the castle in Guadalest, it's well worth visiting because it has the best views. You'll get fabulous photos of the bell tower that tops the ridge, the smooth, carpet-like reservoir in the valley and the mountains tumbling down to the coast. You can even see the sea.'

First up is Guadalest. The jewel in the crown of the Costa Blanca interior clings to a rocky outcrop amid some of the most romantic scenery imaginable. Wander the village's dozen or so streets, which are home to eight museums, and pass through tunnels carved into the rock. As you weave up the cobbled lanes towards the top of the ridge, the views over the valley just get better and better.

Then it's on to one of the natural wonders of the Costa Blanca – the Algar waterfalls. With pebble beaches, deep blue pools, mossy channels and thundering cascades, it's like a natural waterpark. Stroll along the trail to the sparkling clear pools of the River Algar and admire some of Mother Nature's finest work. Sofia says, ‘The water here is beautiful, clean and refreshingly cold even in the height of summer, because it flows directly from sources high in the mountains.'

There are also smaller, original boutiques selling haute couture clothing. Martí adds, ‘If all that shopping tires you out, pop over to the art nouveau Colon Market. It's evolved into an epicurean food hall and is a go-to, not just for the nibbles but for the design of the building itself. It's a good spot to take a break at one of the cafés.'

And America, which is home to panthers, flamingos, macaws and a tropical forest of plants where you'll find the Maya ruins. Step into the shadows of history at Calaveras Cave, tucked away in Marina Alta. This isn't just any cave; it's a journey back in time, sparked by the discovery of twelve human skulls from the 17th century inside. Look up at the towering formations of stalactites and stalagmites, as you wander through nature's own art gallery. It's like being in a live documentary, but you're the explorer, navigating through history with each step. Your next stop is Calpe, a seaside retreat along the Costa Blanca.
