Ta en närmare titt på mayafolkets historia och traditioner på denna resa utanför allfarvägarna. Du besöker den gamla Mayastaden Ek' Balam - den senaste som öppnats för allmänheten - samt Yalcoba för att bada i cenoten och ett stopp i Valladolid. Francesca, en av våra lokalguider, säger: "Arkeologerna började upptäcka Ek' Balam först 1985, och de gräver fortfarande i dag. Det är en mer komplett plats än många andra, och du kan fortfarande föreställa dig det dagliga livet i mayastaden som pågår runt omkring dig när du utforskar. Men den främsta anledningen till att jag gillar Ek' Balam är att det är så få besökare här.

Vi börjar äventyret med ett guidat besök på Ek' Balam, som översätts till " Den svarta jaguaren". Platsen har mer än 40 strukturer och dess murar bildade en labyrint, medan huvudpyramiden, känd som Akropolis, har en välbevarad ingång som omges av en jaguars öppna käkar och huggtänder. Den är större än till och med El Castillo i Chichen Itzá. Det bästa av allt är att du kan gå upp på toppen - vilket få Maya-platser tillåter.

Efteråt åker vi till Yalcoba där du kan prova på chokladtillverkning och lära dig hur man tillverkar obsidian i en workshop. Efter en tequila- och mezcalprovning har du tid att njuta av den kristallklara cenoten och sedan äta en välsmakande lunchbuffé med typiska regionala rätter. Slutligen gör vi ett snabbt stopp i centrala Valladolid, en stad känd för sin konst och arkitektur och en bildskön blandning av färgglada kolonialbyggnader och historiska kyrkor.
