When it comes to national treasures, Mt Athos is right up there with the Acropolis in Athens. Halkidiki's easternmost peninsula is the world's one and only monastic republic, ruled over by the black-robed monks of its medieval monasteries. As such access to it is restricted, with all women – and female animals except cats – forbidden to set foot on its shores.

All of which makes this cruise the best – and only – way to see it. Sit back and soak up the sun as your boat sails along the peninsula, giving you close-up views over the monasteries, which are literally perched on the cliffs. It's a fascinating glimpse into the monks' secret world.

And you can't miss the actual Mt Athos, or Holy Mountain, rising up just over 2,000 metres from the peninsula's southern tip – it's a pretty inspiring sight. Later, your boat will arrive at Ouranopoli, where you'll have time for lunch before sailing home.

Halkidiki boat trip with Neos Marmaras visit, swimming and lunch

Slow down and ease into a day where you'll escape the crowds and experience a little laidback luxury as you cruise around the western shore of Halkidiki's Sithonia Peninsula. Helene, a local guide, says “this tour takes us to some of my favourite spots. Spathies Beach has secluded coves without the usual hustle and bustle of the resorts, while Neos Marmaras offers a balance of cosy tavernas and traditional Greek charm, with modern bars and facilities.” You'll head to Nikiti Port where your boat awaits. From here, you'll sail down the coast of the Toroneos Gulf before dropping anchor at Spathies Beach for your first swim stop. Helene adds, “make sure you grab a snorkel and mask to make the most of this hotspot for parrotfish and damselfish – you may find an octopus hiding in rocky reefs, too.” Then, it's back on board to sail towards Neos Marmaras Village.There's free time for a wander around the village, where you can shop for souvenirs or chat with the friendly locals – it's the best way to soak up the culture. Then, you'll return to the sea and sail to Kelyfos Island, affectionally known as Turtle Island, while enjoying a light lunch on board. The cliffs of this tiny island make for some curious-looking cave formations at its edge that beg to be explored. Take the plunge off the side of the boat and swim around this uninhabited land. Or, if your idea of fun is simply basking on the deck with some music and a cold drink in hand, then feel free to unwind. Whatever floats your boat, you'll want to drink in the coastal views as you sail back to the harbour after a day of escapism.

Toroneos Gulf & Turtle Island Boat Cruise

A day at sea to blow the cobwebs away has holiday stamped all over it. Setting sail from the port of Chrousso, you'll glide along the Kassandra and Sithonia peninsulas – dotted with beautiful islands made up of pine trees and bleached white beaches. You'll also stop by Neos Marmaras and Kelifos Island on this relaxing boat trip.Your destination is Toroni, where you'll be able to have fun and games on the beach or just chill out and top up your tan. There'll be a snack provided once you're back on board, while the skipper navigates to Neos Marmaras. One of the biggest ports in Halkidiki, you'll have time here to explore the town and hit the shops.There's a one last stop during the afternoon at Kelifos Island.
