L'imponente edificio neoclassico che ospita l'Altes Museum (Museo Vecchio) fu costruito tra il 1823 e il 1830 dal famoso architetto Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Da oltre cento anni ospita una formidabile collezione di antichità classiche (Antikensammlung). La collezione greca si trova al primo piano del palazzo, completamente rinnovato nel 2011, mentre il primo piano ospita mostre temporanee. Dal 2010 ospita una collezione di opere e reperti provenienti dall'antica Etruria e da Roma.
