La Capilla Expiatoria se construyó en el lugar donde fueron enterrados el rey Luis XVI y la reina María Antonieta en 1793, después de haber sido guillotinados en la Place de la Révolution, ahora conocida como Place de la Concorde. Fue encargado por el rey Luis XVIII, hermano de Luis XVI, en 1815 y terminado en 1826.
