Discover the château of the Counts of Carcassonne and the ramparts, a UNESCO World Heritage site located at the heart of the fortified city.

Carcassone was the seat of power of the Counts of Carcassonne, and then of the famous Trencavel family in the 12th century. Following the Albigensian Crusade, when the Royal forces seized Carcassonne, accusing it of complicity with the Cathars, it became a Royal fortress governed by a seneschal.

Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In the course of your visit you'll get to explore this outstanding example of a medieval fortified town: see its massive defenses encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings as you stroll the streets and take in the beauty of the fine Gothic cathedral.

  • Free admission for all visitors on the first Sunday of each month from November to March and on the European Heritage Days (the third weekend of September)
  • The monument is closed on 1st January, 1st May and 25th December

    Bonjour J’aurais une amélioration a apporté pour les visiteurs.Vous devriez avoir un service de coupon ou autre marque pour que les visiteurs puisses sortir et allez se rafraîchir à l’ombre car il faisait très chaud et interdit de revenir si nous sortions des ramparts.

    Un lieu à voir absolument. Le trajet en bus de Toulouse à Carcassonne a été très apprécié et surtout sans casse-tête. Le personnel de l’agence est advenant, respectueux de l’horaire. L’office du tourisme nous a bien recommandé les services et forfaits qui répondaient à nos besoins. Très satisfaite.

    We visited in early May, so out of the busy season. It was quite quiet on the Ramparts which made it a very enjoyable and leisurely experience. The castle itself is just unbelievable, although there are a lot of areas not accessible.
