Things to do in Musée Marmottan Monet
The Musée Marmottan Monet is a French museum in Paris that holds the world’s biggest Monet collection. It a museum dedicated to a vast number of impressionist and post-impressionist artists. It was opened to the public as the Museum Marmottan in 1934 in the building, a hunting lodge, that was originally property of the Duke Valmy at the edge of Bois de Boulogne.
The lodge was purchased in the year 1882 by Jules Marmottan that passed it on to his son, Paul, who was a great appreciator of art of the Napoleonic era and who dedicated his life to the expansion of his Fathers art collection. Paul Marmottan donated the lodge and the art collection that it held to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts.
Two major donations were given to the Museum in 1957 and 1966, changing the nature of the collection that was previously mostly of the First Empire of Napoleon. The first belonged to Dr. De Bellio, the Physician of many of the first impressionist painters: Manet, Monet, Pissaro, Sisley and Renoir. The second belonged to Monet’s second son, explaining the strong presence of Monet pieces that are in the Musée Marmottan.
The lower floor of the Museum was dedicated to the Monet collection, reflecting the layout that the Musée de l’Orangerie created for the water lily murals – large open rooms that let visitors see the development of the artist’s work throughout his career, from up close and at a distance, offering the chance to fully appreciate Monet's work.
