Att göra – Statliga museet i Auschwitz-Birkenau
Auschwitz-Birkenau komplexet har lämnat sitt skamliga märke på mänsklighetens historia. En symbol för förintelsen, under dess fem år av drift av över en miljon judar, tillsammans med polacker, romani och andra grupper, som systematiskt dödades av tyska ockupanter under andra världskriget. Ett besök på komplexet är konfronterande och känslomässigt laddat och är en viktig del av den mänskliga erfarenheten.
Sammansatt av två sektioner, Auschwitz I och Auschwitz II-Birkenau, tillsammans förmedlar de omfattningen av föreningen. Auschwitz I var den huvudplatsen som öppnades i 1940 med den nu ökända skylten på sin port Arbeit Macht Frei ("Work set You Free"). Det rymde de första lägren, kontoren av SSNA och det var där som brottsliga medicinska experiment och de första gasningar där Zyklon B användes, ägde rum. Auschwitz II-Birkenau skapades senare och blev för alla avsikter och ändamål ett utrotningsläger. Resterna av dess gaskamrar och krematorium, tillsammans med primitiva baracker, kan fortfarande ses.
Sedan 1947 har denna sajt blivit ett minnesmärke och museum tillägnat de många offren i Auschwitz. Båda lägren kräver minst 90 minuter vardera för att få en omfattande förståelse för de händelser som ägde rum här. Med över 2 000 000 besökare per år är det klokt att boka i förväg.

“So we booked this day trip, week before flying out got told due to Auschwitz entry time we would have to do salt mines another day. We could not as we flew back that day early. Auschwitz was eye opening and an experience I will not forget. Luckily we got half our money back for mines”
