Retken kuvaus

Tämä kokopäiväretki vie sinut Kyproksen pohjoisosaan kolmelle kiehtovimmalle paikalle – muinaiseen Salamiin kaupunkiin, Famagustan vanhaan kaupunkiin ja Varoshan ”aavekaupunkiin”. Elpida, yksi paikallisoppaistamme, sanoo: "Pohjois-Kypros on paikka, jossa aika on pysähtynyt - tarkalleen vuoteen 1974. Jäljellä on joukko keskeneräisiä hotelleja, puoliksi raunioituneita kirkkoja ja kapeita minareetteja."

Matka menneisyyteen alkaa antiikin aikaisesta Salamiista. Tutustut muun muassa sen raunioituneisiin temppeleihin sekä osittain restauroituun teatteriin. Stavroula, toinen paikallisoppaistamme, kertoo: "Salamis ei pelkästään täynnä muinaisia myyttejä, vaan pyhä Barnabas, joka toi kristinuskon Kyprokselle ensimmäisellä vuosisadalla, on haudattu läheiseen luostariin."

Nautittuasi lounaan, vierailet Famagustassa, jonka vanhaa kaupunkia suojaavat yhä muurit, jotka venetsialaiset rakensivat vuosisatoja sitten. Oppaasi esittelee sinulle nähtävyyksiä, kuten linnan ja moskeijaksi muuttuneen goottilaisen katedraalin. Elpida kertoo: "Pääsisäänkäynnin edessä on viikunapuu, jonka katedraalin rakentaneet ristiretkeläiset istuttivat - se on siis Famagustan vanhin elävä puu." Vierailun päätteeksi teet vielä kävelykierroksen Varoshan "aavekaupungissa". Tämä aikoinaan suosittu rantalomakohde on ollut autioituneena yli 50 vuotta. Cyprus is all rolling hills dotted with pretty villages. On this adults-only tour, you'll see where a legend was born, visit the ruins of Kourion, venture to the village of Omodos and cap off the day with a wine tasting. Eva, one of our local guides, says of this excursion, ‘You'll wander through layers of history, culture and mythology.'You'll dive straight into the past at Kourion, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Cyprus. Visit the Roman baths and amble into the site's centrepiece, the Greco-Roman theatre. Concerts are still held to this day. While the mosaics of the trio of excavated houses known as those of Eustolius, the Gladiators and Achilles are as impressive as when they were laid down. The 15th-century Kolossi Castle is up next. This steeped-in-legend Crusader-built fortress is nowadays surrounded by blooming plants. Then, we'll head for a local lunch in a family-run taverna before visiting mountain-fringed Omodos where you'll wander around skinny cobbled streets lined with Byzantine buildings. It's Eva's favourite village. She says, ‘The charm of the stone houses, the tranquillity and peace. It's as if it has sprung from a fairytale. I love dropping into one of the cafés and seeing locals have philosophical discussions, political arguments and a bit of gossip.' To finish, there's a wine tasting session, where you'll learn all about sweet commandaria wine – one of the oldest varieties in the world.

Blue Lagoon, gorge and beach tour by boat and 4x4 in Akamas

On this trip, you'll explore the Akamas peninsula by land and sea. And, rather than your typical coach set-up, you'll be in a 4x4 vehicle. The area is known for its natural beauty, so you're in for a real treat. Your day begins at Avakas Gorge, perhaps Cyprus' most impressive natural wonder, with a half-hour walk through its deep canyon with sheer walls of limestone that form a natural, narrow tunnel. Other star turns include Lara Beach, where a turtle conservation project has been protecting sea turtles for decades, enjoying lunch not far from Latchi harbour, and then a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon where you can take a dip in water so clear you'll see your toes.

Troodos Mountains 4x4 tour with meze lunch

Spend the day travelling through the forested Troodos Mountains and discover some of Cyprus' wildest landscapes on this 4x4 tour. With a cool dining area in a veranda, a clay oven and an in-house chef cooking up dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, it's an attraction in itself. Next, we'll travel to Latchi harbour to catch the boat to the Blue Lagoon. From here, you'll cruise out into the open sea, following the glittering waters to the Blue Lagoon, where your captain will drop anchor for you to enjoy the surroundings. Take a dip, snorkel or simply stay on the deck to sunbathe – the choice is yours. There are many boat trips to the Blue Lagoon, but no other tour combines it with Pafos Zoo for a great family day out.
