Ting at foretage sig på Auschwitz-Birkenau statsmuseum
Auschwitz-Birkenau komplekset, et symbol på Holocaust, har efterladt et skamfuldt mærke på den menneskelige historie. Gennem 5 års drift blev over en million jøder sideløbende med polakker, romaer og andre grupper systematisk slået ihjel af den tyske besættelsesmagt under 2. Verdenskrig. Et besøg til komplekset er konfronterende og følelsesladet og en del af den menneskelige erfaring.
Bestående af to sektioner Auschwitz I og Auschwitz II-Birkenau, som sammen udgør størrelsen på dette kæmpe kompleks. Auschwitz I var hovedområdet og åbnede i 1940 med det nu berygtede skilt over dets port Arbeit macht frei. Det indeholdte de første lejre, SS kontorer, og det var her ulovlige medicinske eksperimenter og de første gasninger med Zyklon B fandt sted. Auschwitz II-Birkenau kom senere og blev på alle leder og kanter en udryddelseslejr. Resterne af gaskamrene og krematoriet sammen med primitive barakker kan stadig ses.
Siden 1947 har stedet været mindesmærke og museum dedikeret til de mange ofte i Auschwitz. Begge lejre kræver mindst 90 minutter hver for at få en fyldestgørende forståelse af begivenhederne, der fandt sted her. Med over to millioner besøgende hvert år anbefales det at booke på forhånd.

“The tour itself was great and we did have a memorable experience. However pick up time was 12 but we wasn't informed of the 2.5 hour delay I had to call Tui to find this out myself. Our guide Ollie was amazing and very welcoming and informative. Poor planning with communication though we stood outside in the cold for almost an hour before finding out about the delay.”
